Orkney Future Ports: Charting a greener, ambitious future

Far from being a remote group of Scottish islands, Orkney’s prime marine location is home to a range of global industries, including renewables, energy and tourism.

Combining our wealth of natural resources with Orkney Future Ports will mean that the right facilities are built in the right locations, ready for the next generation of onshore wind developments off the coast of Scotland.

Orkney Future Ports represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to secure the UK’s position as a leader in the global renewables industry, deliver infrastructure for key offshore wind sites and meet ambitious net zero targets.

The need for improved port infrastructure

Don’t just take our word for it - a number of high-profile reports published in the last year alone have called for greater investment in port infrastructure to support the development of our growing offshore wind industry.

Investment of up to £4bn in integration and manufacturing and assembly ports are required to reach UK’s FLOW ambition, with benefits being significantly greater than the cost.”

Scapa Flow: largest natural harbour in the Northern Hemisphere

The Orkney Islands is home to Scapa Flow, one of the deepest natural harbours in the world. It’s so big it could fit the entire city of Edinburgh - or 26 Heathrow Airports within its area. Scapa Flow has a rich history, not only as a strategic military base during both world wars but as a centre of energy production, from oil and gas in the 1970s to renewables now and beyond.

Scapa Flow provides a diverse range of berthing and anchorage options, which will expand through the construction of Scapa Deep Water Quay.

Our projects

State-of-the-art developments within Scapa, at Hatston and Lyness will make the Orkney Islands a world-leading innovation centre, supporting the needs of the renewables sector both now and into the future.
